Transitions and the Sacred

Just when we settle into complacency, change — welcome or not — enters our lives.

For more than a decade, I’ve been privileged to publish, speak, and coach on navigating professional transitions: the predictable stages, what challenges to expect, and how to support yourself each step of the way.

It’s an important subject, as well I know. My own challenging transition from full-time stay-at-home mom to paid work was much, much harder than I dreamed it would be. In fact, my experience led me to pursue training and certification to become a coach so I could support others who might be facing similar struggles determining and pursuing their calling.

Because, honestly? The alternative to learning how to surf these waves of change is stagnation.

Recently, I was invited to speak on transitions at a local house of worship. I lit up. Here was a new environment and a new lens through which to explore this favorite subject of mine.

“What is the common thread?” I asked myself. “What connects us all in the world of transitions?”

And this is what I came up with.

I believe we are here for our brief spin on earth to grow more fully into ourselves. It’s from this space — being all of you — that you tap into your compassion, the mystery of grace, and your power. Growing into who you’re meant to be connects you to the gifts that you uniquely can offer to the world.

And the world sorely needs what only you can offer.

Transitions offer a vehicle for your conscious growth.

There’s something inside each of us that resists living diminished versions of ourselves. That well-known constant in our lives — change — propels us out of our comfy status quo. Change’s partner, transition, provides the roadmap to our new ground of being.

It’s not always graceful or smooth, going through a transition. It certainly brings you face-to-face with your fears and your self-imposed limitations.

But it also unveils to you your courage and your creativity. And along the way, you are invited to tap into the sacred:

Your inner wisdom.

A connection to something bigger than your everyday thoughts.

The love and encouragement of your near and dear.

You learn that you are surrounded by love, inside and out, that will guide your vision and lend you support as you navigate this miraculous life’s journey of yours.

Transitions challenge us to step into new roles and uncover strengths and gifts that may have otherwise lain dormant.

I’m excited for this upcoming opportunity to gather with another group of sojourners to learn about the terrain that lies ahead, to explore and discover that great unknown, “What’s Next,” and join in the creative flow of life’s course.

If you are facing a transition and feeling adrift, know that you are not alone. Tap into the love and support that are here for you. From this space, go ahead, tap into your courage and take that next brave step in your own life’s creative journey.
